Introduction
For more than 40 years, Distinctive Systems has been helping coach, bus and tour operators manage and grow their businesses with innovative software solutions. Today, we are the world's leading supplier of management software for the industry, supporting more than 2,600 systems from our head office in the UK and our offices in the USA and Australia.
Our Story
Distinctive Systems was founded by Mike Whitehead with a simple ambition, to make running a coach business easier through technology.
Mike joined his family's long-established coach business, where he experienced first-hand the challenges involved in managing charter and contract bookings. Recognizing that technology could help improve efficiency, he purchased a computer and began developing software to improve the way the business was managed.
Working from the family dining table during evenings and weekends, Mike spent over a year creating what would become the first version of Coach Manager. Initially developed to support his own family's business, the software soon attracted interest from other operators who faced similar challenges.
More than 40 years later, Distinctive Systems has grown into the world's leading supplier of management software for coach, bus and tour operators, supporting thousands of systems worldwide from our offices in the UK, USA and Australia.
Although the business has grown significantly, we remain a family-run company. Following Mike's passing, his son Chris took over as Managing Director, continuing the family legacy and the values on which Distinctive Systems was founded. Mike's family continue to play active roles in the business, helping to maintain the personal approach, industry knowledge and commitment to customer support that have been central to our success.
Mike joined the family coach business. During evenings and weekends, he began developing software to help streamline the company's operations.
1980After speaking with fellow operators at local association meetings and discovering there was strong interest in his software, Mike founded Distinctive Systems Ltd.
Apr 1982The family coach business was sold to a local operator and Mike’s father Frank joined him at Distinctive Systems. Mike grew the business across the UK, installing software, training operators and supporting customers. The first year saw 23 systems sold.
1982Distinctive Systems moved into new offices in York.
1988The company relocated to its current headquarters in York.
1995The original MS-DOS and Unix-based systems were replaced by the first Microsoft Windows version, powered by the Microsoft Access database engine.
1995Distinctive Systems first SQL Server based product, Coach Manager was launched, providing a more powerful and scalable platform for customers.
2001Distinctive Systems released its Vehicle Maintenance System, its second Microsoft SQL Server-based product.
2003Distinctive Systems expanded into the United States, marking the company's first international distribution.
2003Distinctive Systems Australia was formed, with a team created to support clients in Australia and New Zealand.
2006Distinctive Systems released its Tour Booking System, replacing its well established Passenger Booking System.
2006Distinctive Systems Inc. was established in the United States, expanding its commitment to the North American market.
2009Cloud-based portals for Coach Manager are released.
2017An extension to the York headquarters was added, providing enhanced facilities for customer training and events.
May 2020Distinctive Systems released its redesigned Driver App.
May 2023Chris Whitehead was appointed Managing Director, beginning the next chapter of the company's leadership.

Over the years, Distinctive Systems has grown significantly from its early beginnings, while remaining focused on the needs of the coach, bus and tour industry. As the business has expanded, we have continued to invest in building a talented team of experienced professionals who share our passion for supporting operators.
Many members of our sales and support teams joined us from the industry, bringing valuable industry knowledge and first-hand experience of the challenges our customers face. This insight helps us continue to develop solutions that are practical, relevant and designed around the needs of our users.
We have also invested heavily in our development capabilities, supporting staff through IT degrees and recruiting skilled developers to build a strong in-house team. This combination of technical expertise and industry understanding enables us to continue enhancing our systems and delivering solutions that support our customers' success.
Our continued growth allows us to reinvest in the business and improve the experience we provide to our clients. This includes our purpose-built training center at our UK headquarters, which enables us to deliver comprehensive training and help customers get the greatest possible value from their systems.
